Hearing on Senate schools bill takes center stage

A hearing on a bill setting requirements for public and taxpayer-funded private voucher schools drew education advocates in droves to the Capitol for the second time in two weeks. WEAC members Lyman Elliott of Beloit and Kim Schroeder of Milwaukee were among those urging legislators to require the same standards for all schools that receive taxpayer funding.

Public school advocates ask Assembly committee, ‘Where is the support?’

Supporters of public education spoke strongly Wednesday against an Assembly Republican bill that would pave the way for converting public schools to privately run charter schools throughout the state. “I see a lot of sanctions in this bill, but where is the support?” Pewaukee Superintendent JoAnn Sternke asked the Assembly Education Committee at a hearing in the State Capitol.
