Teacher John Havlicek keeps testifying as Republican legislators walk out

La Crosse teacher and WEAC member John Havlicek was the last one standing at Tuesday’s legislative hearing on the so-called “right to work” bill. Havlicek had waited 10 1/2 hours to testify but just before his turn came up Republican legislators on the Senate Labor Committee decided to call it quits and abruptly ended the hearing, saying they had heard of a “credible threat” that the hearing was going to be disrupted by protesters.

As you can see in the video below, the citizens still waiting to testify chanted, “Let us speak,” as the Republicans quickly left the room. Havilicek, who had spoken earlier in the day at a rally outside the Capitol, proceeded – with the permission of security and the two Democratic legislators on the committee – to sit down and testify. Like so many who had gone before him, Havlicek expressed strong opposition against the bill.
